About Charlotte
I provide focused Math and Physics tuition for students following the Alberta curriculum, alongside foundational Chemistry, introductory Computer Science and school French. My approach combines careful explanation with practice that asks students to make decisions for themselves: which method to use, why it applies and how to check the result. Earning my Alberta Permanent Professional Certificate involved classroom teaching and formal evaluations of my practice. One lesson I took from that process is the value of asking students to explain a decision before moving on. That is why reasoning has such a prominent place in my sessions. At the start of our work together, I look through a few questions and a recent piece of classwork. This helps me distinguish between a gap in understanding, an algebraic difficulty and an issue with interpreting the question. From there, we agree on priorities that fit the student's current course and upcoming assessments. A session might involve comparing two ways of solving a problem, translating a graph into a written explanation, or revisiting a solution to identify an error. I pay particular attention to units, notation and the logical order of written working. These details make an answer easier to follow and often reveal whether the underlying idea is secure. My Chemistry support concentrates on particle models, reactions and the mathematical foundations of calculations. In introductory Computer Science, students practise tracing algorithms and explaining how a short program reaches its result. I also offer French as a second language support for Grades 4–8, with focused work on vocabulary, sentence structure and speaking. The level and purpose of each lesson are agreed from the student's course materials. For revision, I use a mixture of familiar exercises and questions presented in a different form. We keep track of topics that need another look so that revision has a clear direction. I offer online lessons in English or French. Please include your Alberta course and the areas you would like to work on when you send an enquiry.
Tutoring experience
My experience spans classroom teaching and individual tuition in Alberta Math and Physics. I have supported students over the course of a school term, provided revision sessions before assessments and worked with learners preparing for the greater independence expected in senior courses. Much of this work has involved helping students use existing knowledge more reliably. They may recognise a formula but be uncertain about its conditions, or complete a calculation without being able to interpret the result. Reviewing written solutions has been particularly useful in identifying these patterns. I have also tutored in both English and French, with attention to the mathematical and scientific vocabulary used in the student's own course materials. My additional tutoring includes foundational Chemistry, introductory programming and Grades 4–8 French language work, adapting the same attention to sequence, explanation and practice to each subject.
Teaching approach
Students can keep a brief method notebook: when an approach is useful, the decisions it involves and one common error to check. The emphasis is on selecting a method, not collecting formulas.
