About Daniel
Chemistry requires students to move between what they can observe, what particles are doing and how those ideas are represented in symbols. I make those connections a central part of my lessons. I tutor Chemistry, general Science and Biology within the BC curriculum. My Biology support focuses on cells and biochemical processes: using molecular ideas to understand enzymes, membranes and how living systems obtain and use energy. My approach is methodical: establish what the question gives us, identify the relevant idea and build an answer with each step explained. For calculations, this includes choosing quantities carefully and checking units. For written responses, we look at whether the explanation actually accounts for the observation. I also use comparison. Looking at two similar questions with different conditions can reveal more than completing a long set of almost identical exercises. Students have time to explain their choices, and I use those explanations to decide what we should practise next. Lessons can focus on a difficult class topic, preparation for a test or a more consistent approach to independent study. Send me the course details and a sample question if you have one; they give us a useful starting point.
Tutoring experience
I have tutored BC Chemistry and general Science students through ongoing course support and targeted assessment preparation. This has included quantitative work, such as balancing equations and relating amounts of substances, alongside written explanations of chemical changes and the interpretation of experimental results. My experience has made me attentive to the transitions between representations. Students may describe an observation accurately but struggle to connect it to a particle diagram, or know a definition without recognising when it is relevant. I have worked with learners at each of these stages, including students returning to foundational topics before continuing with more advanced Chemistry. My postgraduate study in Chemistry provides the subject background for that work. I have also supported Biology topics at the boundary with Chemistry, helping students connect molecular interactions to cell processes and interpret the evidence shown in a biological experiment.
Teaching approach
I often begin with a brief question from an earlier session, before turning to the current topic. This checks what has been retained and whether an idea can be used without the original example beside it.
