About Emma

Hi, I'm Emma. I offer English and French tutoring for students following the Ontario curriculum, and I like lessons with plenty of conversation. Sometimes you know exactly what you want to say, but getting it onto the page is another matter. We can talk through your ideas first, find a useful order for them and then build a paragraph that sounds like you. In English, I also help with reading closely, choosing evidence and explaining what a quotation contributes to your argument. I chose teacher education because I wanted to help students turn their ideas into writing they felt comfortable sharing. I hold an Ontario General Certificate of Qualification and Registration, and my training helped me think more carefully about when to offer feedback and when to let a learner finish a thought. For French, I mix short conversations with focused work on vocabulary, grammar and writing. If speaking feels awkward, we can rehearse a few useful phrases and gradually make the conversation less scripted. Corrections should help you try again, and I give you room to finish a thought before we revisit it. We can use English, French or a combination of both during a lesson, depending on what we're practising. Let me know your grade, your French programme if relevant, and what you find easiest and hardest at the moment. That tells me much more than a mark on its own.

Tutoring experience

My tutoring experience brings together English reading and writing with French language practice for Ontario students. I’ve supported learners over a school term as well as those looking for help with a particular assignment, presentation or upcoming assessment. Having both subjects in my background has been useful when a student needs to switch between them as their workload changes. In English, I’ve spent a lot of time helping students move from a promising comment about a text to a paragraph that develops it. In French, I’ve worked with learners who understand more than they feel comfortable saying aloud. Those experiences have made me especially aware of how different written and spoken confidence can be, even for the same person.

Very reassuring with my son's French. Emma lets him finish what he wants to say before going back over a mistake. He's much more willing to speak in the lessons.

The feedback actually tells me what to change. My paragraphs used to end with a quotation and no explanation, I can see why that wasn't enough now.

I can get through a short French conversation without planning every sentence in English first now. Still make mistakes but I don't freeze up as much!

The speaking practice is useful and Emma is easy to talk to. I'd prefer a little more grammar alongside it. We discussed that at the end and agreed to include some next time.

Really helpful with essay planning. Thank you!

Our Grade 8 daughter has lots of ideas and used to get stuck on the first sentence. Talking them through with Emma before making a plan has really helped. Her writing still sounds like her, just easier to follow.

We've only had a few lessons, but my son is already less reluctant to open an English assignment. Emma asks him questions that help him find his own point instead of waiting for someone to tell him what to write.
