About James
I tutor IB Biology and Chemistry with a focus on connecting subject knowledge to clear scientific explanations. Knowing a definition is a useful start; applying it to a new experiment or an unfamiliar set of results takes a different kind of practice. That is where I like to concentrate our work. We can build a topic around its central ideas, use diagrams to show the connections and then examine how those ideas appear in questions. I pay particular attention to interpreting data, choosing relevant evidence and explaining each stage of a calculation or argument. You will have opportunities to reason aloud and revise an answer after feedback, so we can identify precisely what needs improvement. Sessions can support your current lessons or form part of a more focused revision plan. When you get in touch, please specify Biology or Chemistry, your IB level and whether your priority is understanding content, applying it or writing stronger responses.
Tutoring experience
I have supported IB Diploma students in Biology and Chemistry through regular subject tuition and periods of focused revision. My work has included consolidating core concepts, interpreting experimental data and developing written responses that explain a conclusion with appropriate evidence. Across these sessions, I have worked with students who were secure in factual recall but less confident when a question introduced an unfamiliar experiment. I have also helped learners connect material from different topics, particularly where biological processes depend on chemical principles. My biochemistry background and IB teaching qualification inform that subject support. Reviewing students' practice responses over time has given me useful experience distinguishing incomplete knowledge from difficulty selecting and communicating the relevant detail.
Teaching approach
For some practice tasks, I ask students to separate three things on the page: the observation, the scientific explanation and the evidence linking them. This makes unsupported steps in an answer easier to identify.
