About Thomas
I help students following the BC curriculum build confidence in Math, Physics and Computer Science, and offer Core French support for Grades 5–8. There's room for questions, and we break each task into manageable steps. Whether you’re catching up with classwork, preparing for a test or looking for a challenge, we’ll start with what you want to work on. I pursued my BC Professional Certificate of Qualification to develop practical ways of helping students tackle problems independently. During teacher training, I found that asking someone to explain a step often told me more than checking the answer alone. I still use that habit when we work through a problem together. My first step is to look at a question with you and hear how you would approach it. That helps us find the point where things become unclear, whether it’s an unfamiliar idea, a missing foundation or simply knowing how to begin. We’ll work through an example together, then give you a chance to try a similar problem with support when you need it. In Math, that might mean connecting an equation to a graph. In Physics, we might sketch the situation before choosing a formula. In Computer Science, we can trace a program line by line to understand what it’s doing and where it goes wrong. I want you to be able to explain your reasoning as well as reach an answer. I also speak French and enjoy helping younger learners get comfortable with it. In Core French, we can practise useful phrases, read a short passage or build a few sentences around the vocabulary you're learning at school. There's time to rehearse aloud before putting anything on the page. There’s always room to say, “Can we go through that again?” Send me a message with your course, the topics you’re finding difficult and what you’d like to achieve, and we can discuss where to start.
Tutoring experience
Across six years of tutoring, I’ve supported BC students with Math, Physics and Computer Science through regular lessons and more focused work before assessments. Some have been building confidence in the basics, while others have wanted to explore questions that go beyond a familiar classroom example. My Mathematics degree from the University of British Columbia and teacher training have given me a foundation for that work, but the variety of students has shaped it too. I’ve helped learners move between equations and graphs, work through multi-step physics problems and debug programs they initially found difficult to follow. I’ve also supported students moving into more independent study, where knowing how to check their own reasoning becomes increasingly useful. Alongside my technical subjects, I've helped Grades 5–8 Core French learners with vocabulary, short written tasks and speaking practice, drawing on my own use of both English and French.
